Sticker shock happens to the best of us. Take Shopify Plus. People get so distracted by the $2,500 a month price tag that they don’t take the time to see what that really gets them. But what if I told you you could actually save money with Shopify Plus? As Arizona’s first Shopify Plus partner, Fyresite is here to break down how to save money with Shopify Plus.

What Shopify Plus Offers

You have .05 seconds to make an impression with your website. That’s how quickly a potential customer will make their judgment of your site. That’s why it’s important that your website is flawless. And yes, sometimes this comes with a higher cost.

Shopify Plus has a higher subscription cost. For businesses that make less than $800,000 a month, it’s a flat rate of $2,500 a month. When revenue exceeds $800,000 a month, you’ll be charged .25% of the month’s revenue, but only for the month that broke that limit. However, for this cost you get a lot of other great deals.

No Hidden Costs

For one, the subscription fee is the only required cost for your Shopify Plus store. You can choose to add apps that have their own subscription fees or pay for custom development (from a Shopify Plus partner like Fyresite!), but it’s not required to run your store. Any additional costs are your choice.

Low Transaction Fees

With each level of a Shopify plan, the processing fee from Shopify Payments will vary. Basic offers 2.9% + 30¢ USD online credit card fee, Shopify 2.6% + 30¢ USD online, and Advanced 2.4% + 30¢ USD online. But Shopify Plus offers the lowest transaction fees. If you sell only with Shopify Payments, you pay only the credit card fee, which varies based on country. When you’re selling a lot, you need a plan that doesn’t take all your profit with it.

Exclusive Features

One of the biggest advantages of being on the Shopify Plus plan are the exclusive features it unlocks. This includes B2B capabilities, an enhanced checkout editor, an organizational admin, and more!

For comparison, B2B capabilities on Magento can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on size and complexity of the site. With Shopify Plus, you get these capabilities with the cost of your subscription. And that’s just for this one capability. That’s not counting everything else you get with Shopify Plus.

Will I Save Money With Shopify Plus?

If you’re a merchant that is making over $1,000,000 annually, generating enough profit that transaction fees are substantial, or need access to exclusive features like B2B, you may save money with Shopify Plus.

Still not sure? Try calculating some of your monthly costs. How much are you spending on hosting? Apps? Transaction fees? How much time are you spending manually running your site that could be spent on other things instead? When you calculate this all up, you may be surprised how much you’re spending.

Let’s put this in perspective. If you were on Magento Commerce, you would be paying between $500-6,500/yr for Magento Commerce hosting, $22,000-125,000/yr for Magento Commerce license, $10-400/yr for the domain name, 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, $10,000+ for development, and between $0-5,000 for design. Even on the low end, this averages almost $24,000 a month. Yikes! Suddenly $2,500 a month sounds a lot better, doesn’t it?

And this is not including other costs, such as opportunity costs. One of Fyresite’s clients, Chassis Unlimited, asked us to migrate them from Magento to Shopify Plus in part because of the constant updates and concerns about the store not working that made them spend day and night stressing about their store. To read more about why they made the move to Shopify Plus, read our blog here.

When you’re spending lots of money advertising your products, you need to make sure that your potential customers are being directed to a site that they can use. A site not functioning properly is not a risk that any merchant should feel like they have to take.

If you’re a growing business that is not quite ready for Shopify Plus, don’t fret. You can migrate to any tier of Shopify and move up as your business grows.
