Twice a year, Shopify releases Shopify Editions – a breakdown of what new innovations have been brought to the eCommerce platform. These are typically bright and exciting, filled with new, new, new. For their Winter 2025 edition, they went boring. That’s because this edition wasn’t filled with new apps or anything, but rather over 120 improvements to current offerings.
Boring has never looked more exciting to our Fyresite developers. Here’s what they picked out as the most interesting improvements of the boring edition.
Improvements to Draft Orders
Draft orders allow merchants to create an order on the behalf of their customer. Whether this is for a single customer or business to business, it allows payment flexibility beyond the traditional secure card checkout.
Shopify’s new improvements allow draft orders to work with Shopify Functions, bundles, and checkout extensions.
With this update, checkout customizations made using Shopify Functions now apply to draft orders. This keeps the site journey consistent for all customers.
Draft orders can now be used for bundles and locking product prices. Shopify Plus merchants get the added benefit of being able to collect deposits and view (and charge) vaulted cards.
Draft order checkouts are exclusive to Shopify Plus and allow draft order checkouts to load the same checkout UI extensions as their regular checkouts.
Improvements to Shopify PoS
Shopify’s PoS system is pretty impressive, with different tiers depending on your business needs. And it just got better.
Winter 2025 saw the improvements of Shopify PoS, now allowing bundles, retail customer segments, and customer metafields.
Shopify PoS allowing bundles means that PoS merchants can publish bundles. Simply set up the bundle in the app and publish them to the PoS via the product detail page.
Retail customer segments are a great marketing tool, allowing for personalized campaigns based on location. Customer segments now have location based filters, targeting customer segments closer to you.
Customer metafields, previously used just for eCommerce customers, has been expanded to work with Shopify PoS for in person customers. By being able to use and view customer metafields, there is a double bonus. Not only does it make a better shopping experience for the customer, but it also allows merchants to collect customer information and improve marketing and business efforts.
Improvements to Search and Discovery
Search and Discovery may be one of the most used Shopify apps, regardless of subscription tier. That’s why our dev team was so excited to see new improvements being made for it.
Search and Discovery is now even better with the addition of combined listings and category metafields.
Combined listings now give merchants control over how their products show up in search product recommendations. There is now the option that allows merchants to choose to show parent products, child products, or both.
Category metafields are now able to be used for filtering search results, giving more flexibility and relevant filters on the storefront.
Improvements to Loading Speeds
Speed is one of the most important aspects of any website. After all, the speed that a page loads can be the difference between a sale and an abandoned cart.
The loading speed of the cart and checkout are up 50%, getting your customers through their sale quicker. Accelerated checkout buttons have also benefited from the improved loading speeds, loading up to 58.8% faster on the product detail pages.
Customers are not the only ones benefiting from faster loading speeds. The Shopify Admin is now loading faster than it ever has before, with initial page loads up 25% faster and page to page navigation 12.5% faster.
