It’s no secret that we really love automotive fitment at Fyresite. In fact, we love it so much that we created our own solution. But that doesn’t mean we think every automotive store needs a full fitment system.
The right approach depends on the size of your catalog, how many vehicles your products serve, and how difficult it is for a customer to confirm they’re buying the right part. A store with 10 highly specific products has a different problem from one with thousands of parts and overlapping vehicle applications.
So, when does fitment become worth it?
What Does Automotive Fitment Do?
Automotive fitment connects a product to the vehicles it fits. A shopper can enter details such as their vehicle’s year, make, and model, then see compatible parts or confirm whether a product they’re viewing will work.
That confirmation matters because finding a product and finding the right product are two different tasks. A customer might know they need brake components but still have to work out which option fits their vehicle. Fitment helps answer that question as they shop.
Small Catalogs: Start With Clear Collections
If you sell around 10 products and each one serves a distinct group of vehicles, a dedicated fitment system may be more than you need.
Imagine a store selling a handful of accessories for specific Jeep models. Customers may be able to find the right item through well-organized collections, clear product titles, and compatibility details on each product page. You could let them browse by vehicle group, then drill down to the relevant product.
The goal is to make compatibility easy to understand. If shoppers can reliably reach the right product and confirm it fits, your existing navigation may be doing the job.
Growing Catalogs: Watch for Information Overload
As your catalog grows, collection pages can become harder to navigate. A shopper may have to sift through similar-looking parts, compare long compatibility lists, or open several product pages before finding a match.
Around 250 SKUs is a useful point to start the fitment conversation. It isn’t a strict requirement or a universal cutoff. It’s a practical signal that a catalog may be large enough to overwhelm someone shopping for a vehicle-specific part.
The number alone doesn’t tell the whole story. A 150-product catalog with complex compatibility rules could need fitment sooner.
A larger catalog with simple, clearly separated applications might still be manageable with strong navigation. Pay attention to what customers actually have to do to find and verify a part.
Large or Complex Catalogs: Build Around the Vehicle
For merchants with hundreds or thousands of parts, fitment can become central to the shopping experience. Instead of asking customers to browse the entire catalog and interpret compatibility on their own, you can let them select a vehicle and narrow the choices from there.
Complexity also matters. A part may fit several years and models, while nearly identical parts have different engine, trim, or configuration requirements. In those cases, filtering a collection by vehicle is only part of the job. Shoppers may also need compatibility confirmation on the product page or in the cart.

How Do You Know Which Approach You Need?
Start by looking at the buying experience, not just your SKU count:
- Can customers find the right category quickly?
- If vehicle-specific products are easy to separate into a few collections, clear navigation may be enough.
- Can customers confirm compatibility before buying?
- If that answer is buried in a long description or requires a call to your team, there may be room to improve.
- How many similar products must a shopper compare?
- The more options they have to sort through, the more useful vehicle-based filtering becomes.
- How complicated are your fitment rules?
- Engine, trim, year ranges, and other application details can make a small catalog difficult to shop.
- Will your catalog grow?
- The structure that works for 20 products may become difficult to maintain at 200 or 2,000.
The Right Fitment Solution Fits Your Scale
You don’t need to implement the most complex system available just because you sell automotive products. For a small, focused catalog, thoughtful collections and clear compatibility information may serve customers well.
Once shoppers face hundreds of products or complicated vehicle applications, it’s time to consider a more structured approach.
The 250 SKU mark is a good prompt to evaluate fitment, but the deciding question is simpler: How easily can a customer find a part and know it fits?
If the answer takes too much searching, guessing, or help from your team, Fyresite can help you evaluate the right fitment approach for your Shopify store.
