Shopify Pricing Plans

Shopify offers three core Shopify pricing plans: Shopify Basic ($29 USD /mo), Shopify ($79 USD /mo), and Shopify Advanced ($299 USD /mo). They also offer Shopify Lite for small businesses ($9 USD /mo) and Shopify Plus for large enterprises (starting at $2000 USD /mo).

Each plan comes with several features well worth the extra dough.

Shopify Lite features and benefits

Shopify Lite gives merchants the bare bones tools to get started. Unlike the other plans, Shopify Lite does not come with a website. Instead, merchants copy and paste a bit of code into their existing website to add a buy button.

Shopify Lite is not nearly powerful enough for most businesses. However, it’s great for early startups, small businesses, and MVPs. It’s lite, but cheap.

The Shopify Lite plan comes with the following features.

  • Shopify Admin
  • Buy Button
  • Overview dashboard
  • Finances reports
  • Customer profiles
  • Order management
  • Product management
  • Mobile POS and hardware accessories
  • Shopify POS Lite sales channels
  • Email carts
  • QR code product details
  • In-store inventory
  • Gift cards
  • Split bill
  • Custom discounts and discount codes

Shopify Lite seems cool in theory, but it’s pretty weak. Essentially, it’s little more than a buy button. Shopify Lite is great for self-employed professionals, artists, and more, but if your business has employees, Shopify Lite will bottleneck your entire operation.

Shopify Basic features and benefits

Shopify Basic is a huge upgrade from the bare-bones buy button you get with Shopify Lite. Merchants get a Shopify store, support for unlimited product, and all the other features they need to get started.

  • Online store
  • Unlimited products
  • Two staff accounts
  • 24/7 support
  • Sales channels
  • Four inventory locations
  • Manual order creation
  • Discount codes
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Abandoned cart recovery
  • Gift cards
  • 77% shipping discount
  • Shipping labels
  • Fraud analysis
  • 2.9% + 30¢ USD credit card rate
  • 2.7% + 0¢ USD in-person credit card rate
  • 2.0% transaction fee without Shopify payments
  • Shopify PoS
  • Sell in 133 currencies
  • Sell in up to 20 languages

Shopify Basic is a huge upgrade from a simple buy button, and it’s perfect for small businesses that don’t have a website yet. If you plan to build with a templated theme, Shopify Basic is a great starting point that’s far too often overlooked by small businesses.

However, this Shopify pricing plan is not enough for every business. Shopify Basic doesn’t include any reports or international domains, and medium or large businesses may be bottlenecked by the two staff accounts.

Standard Shopify pricing plan features and benefits

The standard Shopify pricing plan (simply called Shopify) costs an extra $50/month for a few extra features. Below are the features merchants receive wit the standard Shopify plan. The differences between Shopify and Shopify Basic are bolded.

  • Online store
  • Unlimited products
  • Five staff accounts
  • 24/7 support
  • Sales channels
  • Five inventory locations
  • Manual order creation
  • Discount codes
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Abandoned cart recovery
  • Gift cards
  • Standard reports
  • Up to 88% shipping discount
  • Shipping labels
  • USPS Priority Mail Cubic® pricing
  • Fraud analysis
  • 2.6% + 30¢ USD credit card rate
  • 2.5% + 0¢ USD in-person credit card rate
  • 1.0% transaction fee without Shopify payments
  • Shopify PoS
  • Sell in 133 currencies
  • Sell in up to 20 languages
  • International domains
  • International pricing

Many of the features are roughly the same. If none of the bolded features look like they’re worth an extra $50/month, you’re probably best sticking to Shopify Basic. However, for lots of businesses, these bigger shipping discounts, lower transaction fees, extra accounts, and (especially) reports are well worth every penny. The analytics can be divided by domain for an even more detailed picture.

Standard Shopify is best for any business that has outgrown Shopify Basic and wants to sell internationally. However, if $40/month more is too large an expense, stick with the smaller Shopify pricing plan. It’s not worse; it’s better for your business size.

Advanced Shopify features and benefits

For an additional $220/month, Advanced Shopify gives merchants lower fees, extra accounts, and more data. The differences between Advanced Shopify and the standard Shopify plan have been bolded.

  • Online store
  • Unlimited products
  • fifteen staff accounts
  • 24/7 support
  • Sales channels
  • Eight inventory locations
  • Manual order creation
  • Discount codes
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Abandoned cart recovery
  • Gift cards
  • Advanced reports
  • Up to 88% shipping discount
  • Shipping labels
  • Fraud analysis
  • 2.4% + 30¢ USD credit card rate
  • 2.4% + 0¢ USD in-person credit card rate
  • 0.5% transaction fee without Shopify payments
  • Shopify PoS
  • Sell in 133 currencies
  • Sell in up to 20 languages
  • International domains
  • International pricing
  • Per variant pricing

Businesses that use this plan pay much lower fees, gain more accounts, and receive advanced reports with far more data and analytics for their marketing team. For bigger businesses, the advanced reports alone are worth the money.

The plan is brilliant for medium or medium-large companies with bigger teams and more locations. However, it’s not the right fit for everyone. Too many businesses upgrade when the marginal benefits aren’t that big for their own company. Even worse is when a major enterprise stops here. Big companies shouldn’t stop at Advanced Shopify; they should upgrade to Shopify Plus.

Shopify Plus features and benefits

Shopify Plus is perhaps one of the highest quality eCommerce services available for large enterprises. In a nutshell, Shopify Plus gives businesses complete control of every piece of their website, including customized checkouts, expansion stores, infinite staff accounts, and many more extra perks, like amazing networking opportunities and lessons.

In addition to all the features of Advanced Shopify, Shopify Plus includes the following benefits.

  • Shopify organization control
  • Advanced Shopify apps that are designed for high-growth merchants
  • Customizable checkout
  • Additional API calls
  • Launch Team support
  • Merchant Success Program
  • Unlimited staff accounts
  • Nine expansion stores
  • Exclusive beta access
  • Shopify Plus Partner Program
  • Shopify Plus Academy
  • Exclusive Shopify Plus Community membership
  • 100-theme (or theme variant) capacity
  • More admin permission controls
  • More staff permission controls
  • Extra report-specific permission controls
  • More app-specific permission controls
  • Separate wholesale store
  • Wholesale channel
  • Wholesale password protection
  • Shopify POS Pro at every location

Shopify Plus comes with all the bells and whistles. For more details, see our blog post about Shopify Plus.

However, these features don’t come cheap. Businesses must speak directly to a sales representative to use this plan, and pricing starts at a minimum of $2,000 per month.

Unless your business is large enough to be considered an enterprise, these features are not useful or economical. Shopify Plus is a premium service for enterprises only.

Which Shopify pricing plan is right for me?

Contrary to popular belief, the best plan may not be the most expensive one you can afford. Ultimately, merchants should consider the marginal benefits of each plan.

  • Do you only need the most basic bare-minimum possible buy button for an existing website? If this is the case, Pick Shopify Lite.
  • Is Shopify Lite too restrictive? Is a fully-equipped Shopify website with two staff accounts, a shipping discount, and four inventory locations worth an additional $20/month for your business? If this is the case, Pick Shopify Basic.
  • Is Shopify Basic too restrictive? Are international domains, basic reports, three additional staff accounts, an additional inventory location, priority shipping, and a discount on credit card rates worth an additional $50/month for your business? If this is the case, Pick Shopify (standard).
  • Is standard Shopify too restrictive? Are advanced reports, ten more staff accounts, three more inventory locations, and more discounts worth an additional $220/month for your business? If this is the case, Pick Advanced Shopify.
  • Is Shopify Advanced too restrictive? Does your business bring in more than one million dollars in revenue each year? Are unlimited staff accounts, 100 theme variants, custom checkouts, permission controls, headless eCommerce, wholesale channels, and the many exclusive resources worth at least an additional $2000+ /month? If this is the case, Pick Shopify Plus.

More expensive isn’t always better. Shopify Plus is worth every penny for major enterprises, but it provides zero value to a small business owner. Pick the option that brings the most value per dollar.
