It’s always exciting when Shopify releases a new feature or tool. Shopify Canvas is no exception. Announced on October 1, 2026, Canvas aims to bridge the gap between design ideas and execution by giving merchants a visual workspace where they can build alongside Sidekick, Shopify’s AI agent.
Have an idea for your store but aren’t sure how to bring it to life? Canvas gives you a place to explore that idea, see the results, and refine your design.
Another way to bridge the gap between ideas and execution? Work with Fyresite. Our team of experts can help your Shopify store at every stage, from planning your customer experience to building the features your business needs.
What Is Shopify Canvas?
Shopify Canvas is a design workspace that allows merchants to create and customize online store themes. It displays your store’s templates side by side, making it easier to see how different parts of your storefront work together. You can edit elements directly or describe the changes you want to Sidekick.
That broader view is useful because customers experience your store as a connected journey. Your homepage might make a great first impression, but your collection and product pages need to carry that same visual identity through the shopping experience.
Canvas lets you step back to assess the overall design, then zoom in to work on individual details.
Who Can Use Shopify Canvas?
As of October 2026, Shopify Canvas is in early access and available only to certain stores. Shopify currently lists these requirements:
- You must use a desktop device.
- Your Shopify plan must include theme customization.
- Themes must be either from Shopify or custom
Being on Shopify doesn’t automatically mean your store has access. Eligibility also depends on the rollout and your theme.
Since Canvas is still in early access, check Shopify’s current documentation before planning a project around it. Requirements and capabilities may change as the tool develops.
How Does Shopify Canvas Work?
Canvas combines direct visual editing with AI assistance. You can adjust elements yourself, ask Sidekick to make changes, or move between both approaches.
Work With Sidekick
Sidekick can help you turn a design direction into changes to your theme. It asks questions, suggests approaches, and uses your feedback to refine the result. Sidekick also remembers your preferences, saving you from having to repeat them.
To request a change to a particular block, select it before entering your prompt. You can also request broader theme changes through the Work with Sidekick field.
The more clearly you describe your goal, the easier it is to evaluate the result. Instead of asking Sidekick to “make this better,” explain what needs to improve and why.
For example, you might try prompts such as:
- “Make this homepage banner easier to read, with a shorter headline and bigger CTA.”
- “Add more space between the images and text.”
- “Create a cleaner visual hierarchy, with emphasis on the product name, price, and purchase button.”
Treat these as starting points. Review the changes and give specific feedback about what still needs work.
Make Manual Edits
You can select a block and adjust its settings, edit supported text directly in the preview, and change theme settings such as colors and typography.
Manual edits are useful when you already know exactly what you want. A headline adjustment or image swap might be easier to make directly, while a broader design idea may benefit from a conversation with Sidekick.
Preview the Shopping Experience
Canvas previews the working storefront, including interactions and animations. You can also review pages with different products, collections, and screen sizes.
Use that opportunity to look beyond appearance. Can shoppers understand the next step? Are buttons easy to find? Does a layout still work with a longer product title or a different image?
How Do You Get Started With Shopify Canvas?
Eligible stores can open Canvas from the Themes area of the Shopify admin. You can create a new theme by describing your brand to Sidekick or select Duplicate in Canvas for a supported existing theme.
Duplicating creates a separate copy. Your original remains available in the existing theme editor, and changes do not sync between the two.
Before you start, gather your brand colors, typography preferences, images, and a short description of your audience. Also identify the problem you want the design to solve.
The more specific you are, the more help Sidekick can offer.
Do Canvas Changes Go Live Automatically?
Canvas saves changes automatically, but customers see them only after you publish. For a published theme, you use Update, review the changes, and confirm publication.
Version history lets you restore an earlier version. Sidekick edits require asking it to reverse the change or restoring a version; the standard Undo control cannot reverse them.
Before publishing, review your main shopping paths, including navigation, product selection, and adding items to the cart. Check mobile layouts as carefully as desktop layouts.
What Are Shopify Canvas’s Current Limitations?
Canvas has several important limitations during early access:
- Themes edited in Canvas do not receive theme updates.
- You cannot download their theme files.
- You cannot add or configure app blocks or app embeds in Canvas.
- You cannot customize themes for individual markets.
- Theme content translations require Translate & Adapt.
- Adding new blocks requires Sidekick rather than manual insertion.
These limitations matter when deciding whether Canvas fits your store. A merchant with a straightforward storefront may have different needs from a business using extensive app features, localized experiences, or complex custom functionality.
Does Shopify Canvas Replace the Theme Editor?
Not currently. Shopify says Canvas is available alongside the existing theme editor and is not replacing it.
For merchants, the practical question is which workflow supports the changes they need. Review your theme, app requirements, and ongoing maintenance needs before choosing how to build.
How Can Merchants Get More From Canvas?
Start with a specific goal and make changes in manageable steps. Reviewing one section at a time makes it easier to understand whether a change improved the experience.
Keep your customer at the center of each decision. An attractive layout should also help shoppers understand your products, find relevant information, and move toward a purchase.
After publishing, measure the result. Depending on your goal, useful signals might include product page engagement, add to cart rate, or conversion rate. A design change should earn its place through how well it serves your customers.
