Shopify versus Magento 2.0 is not a new argument, but as both platforms have made more modifications to become better eCommerce platforms, it’s time to revisit. Fyresite is here to answer the ultimate question: who has the better eCommerce platform for merchants?
B2B
Traditionally, eCommerce platforms have been used for business to consumer sales, but no longer. Now, eCommerce platforms allow you to operate B2B, B2C, and/or both. But not all B2B platforms are created equally. What makes a truly functional B2B platform?
Shopify
Shopify offers B2B for Shopify Plus members. While Shopify B2B is less than a year old, it already offers merchants so much. Draft orders, quantity rules, and B2B catalogs are only some of the amazing features offered by Shopify B2B. Best of all? There is no additional cost. Shopify B2B features are available to any Shopify Plus merchant. To read more about the benefits of Shopify Plus, look here.
Magento
Magento also offers B2B for merchants. Their integrated B2B eCommerce platform allows customers to self-manage accounts, personalized catalogs, and an easy to use customer portal. The issue? The price. While there is no additional cost for B2B, it still is expensive. As this article explains, merchants pay based on their gross revenue. That means a company making over a million dollars a year will be paying an average of 40,000 a year! In comparison, Shopify Plus costs $2,000 a month, or $24,000 a year, no matter what the company’s gross income is.
Checkout Extensibility
A good eCommerce merchant knows that it is important to keep your branding through your entire site – including checkout. A good eCommerce platform should know that too.
Shopify
Shopify merchants wanted a more customizable checkout experience, and Shopify listened. With the new checkout extensibility, merchants have much more flexibility with their checkout than they did previously. Increased security, easier modifications, and checkout customizations are only a few of the many new and exciting features offered by Shopify checkout extensibility.
Magento
Magento checkout extensibility comes in the form of APIs and extensions. Merchants choose which ones they would like to add to their store. Adding these APIs and extensions can increase checkout extensibility, but it also often is costly, requiring an eCommerce expert to ensure it is completed properly.
Influencer Marketing
Today, everything is impacted by social media. This includes what people buy and where they look for product recommendations. Influencers have truly become marketing’s newest job, and eCommerce platforms are working to make it easier for merchants to fully utilize their skills.
Shopify
Shopify has launched a new initiative called Shopify Collabs. Shopify Collabs connects Shopify merchants with influencers to promote their store/products. Merchants simply create an influencer application, make an application survey, and send gifts (such as a free product or a discount code) to the creators you would like to work with. It’s also important that merchants have business PayPal accounts to pay their creators. Currently, merchants can work with creators to promote on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch.
Magento
Magento does not offer any specific influencer marketing for their merchants. However, the Adobe suite does offer Marketo Engage, which is a marketing automation through which influencer marketing can be done. While it can be integrated with Magento, it is difficult and often requires spending money on an eCommerce expert to make sure it is done properly.
